When purchasing an oriental rug pad or are considering a rug pad, individuals often ask “How much are they?”. Our experiences have proven the more appropriate question SHOULD be “Which rug pad is appropriate for us?” Let’s dive into the reasons for the difference, it really becomes clear that the sales person selling the rugs have done a poor job explaining the long term effects to NOT having a rug pad.
Let’s first look at the question “how much are they?” My sister took Psychology in college and we’ve discussed this topic. The premise behind the question is very apparent, “we just want to spend the least we have to, IF we even have to”. So obviously money is the key component. Unfortunately, most rug buyers aren’t looking into the future and what can happen to their floors at home without the use of an appropriate rug pad. When we at Heirloom Rug Cleaning go into someone’s home to pickup a rug for cleaning, we get to see the after effects to the floors that don’t have appropriate padding. What happens is over time, the natural cause of individuals walking over the rugs with normal everyday use leads to dirt and contaminants coming off their shoes or feet and onto the rug? Then overtime it works thru the fabric and ends up on the beautiful wood floors. The “dirt” is now under the rug acting like sand paper rubbing away at the wood floor. It goes without saying that having the floors re-sanded and stained is MUCH more expensive than buying an appropriate rug pad from the beginning.
So if we look at the costs of an appropriate rug pad vs the cost of having to resurface your flooring, we find something very startling. Let’s take a quick look:
An appropriate rug pad for a 5×7 rug is roughly $57.75.
Having to resurface a floor due to the “sand paper” is roughly $2,200.00.
When you look at these numbers it’s very apparent which question a rug “purchaser” should be asking. If you have questions about which rug pad is appropriate for your rug and floors, give us a call and we will be more than happy to discuss your options. Or you can read more about rug pads here. Don’t let the thought of a few dollars up front end up costing you in the end.
